Older towns - Boonton, Chatham Borough, Dover, Madison, Morristown, Rockaway Borough, Wharton - came to life in the 1800s with the construction of the Morris Canal and Train Lines. Today, these towns are filled with many beautiful Pre-World War II colonials and victorians. During the 1900s towns like Denville, East Hanover, Florham Park, Hanover, and Parsippany flourished with the advent of the automobile and highway system. During the most recent decades, suburban communities and housing developments sprang to life - especially in towns like Kinnelon, Montville, Mount Olive, Randolph, Roxbury, and Washington. From Pre-World War II colonials - to 1950s ranch homes - to modern day center hall colonials - Morris County has lots of neighborhoods and homes to choose from.

Commute and Transportation

Most residents in Morris County commute east towards NYC in the morning. As a result, real estate values tends to become more affordable in the western parts of the County, as commute times typically increase. Commuters have easy access to highways. Interstate 287 runs north-south through Morris County and provides an easy connection to the major east-west routes including Interstate 80, 280, and NJ Route 24. NJ Transit offers rail service on the Morristown Line, Gladstone Branch, and Montclair-Boonton Line. The trains stop at various towns along the way. The Morristown Line offers direct service to Hoboken or NY Penn Station. Passengers who take the Hoboken train can switch to the PATH to reach NYC. Passengers who take the Midtown Direct train, which originates in Dover, will arrive at NY Penn Station. The Montclair-Boonton Line offers service to Hoboken. Along the way, passengers can transfer to another train or bus for a Midtown Manhattan commute. Lakeland Bus Lines provides service to NY Port Authority Terminal in Midtown and has various stops inside Morris County. Finally, NJ Transit runs a bus line down NJ Route 23 providing service to the NY Port Authority.

When it comes to shopping, Morris County is filled with options. Many of the communities, for example, Denville and Madison, have wonderful downtown villages that offer a variety of charming shops and restaurants. East Hanover offers highway shopping with large discount chain stores, strip malls, movie theatres, restaurants, and many other retail outlets surrounding NJ Route 10. Traveling further west, Roxbury is home to the Ledgewood and Roxbury Malls on NJ Route 10. To the east, U.S. Route 46 enters Morris County in Montville and travels east-west through Parsippany and many other towns. Numerous strip malls and chain stores line the highway for miles. The Rockaway Townsquare Mall, which is one of the largest and most modern malls in NJ, is located in Rockaway Township just off Interstate 80 and is anchored by four major department stores - Sears, Macy's, JC Penny's, and Lord & Taylor. The mall features over 200 shops including chain stores like Target, Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods, Best Buy, and Bed, Bath & Beyond. The ITC Crossing, an 860,000 square foot shopping center adjacent to the International Trade Center in Mount Olive, is easily accessible to Interstate 80 and U.S. Routes 46 and 206. ITC Crossing features a host of retail shops including larger national chains like Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, Lowe's Home Improvement, The Gap, and Old Navy. It also features many of America's most popular fast-food and casual-dining restaurants. NJ Route 23 enters Morris County in Pequannock and travels northwest through Kinnelon where there are numerous retail outlets along with the Kinnelon Mall. From small villages with charming shops and restaurants - to large national chain stores and malls - Morris County has convenient shopping for just about everything you could imagine.
