Cedar Knolls is a section of Hanover Township in Morris County, NJ. The community began in 1913 with a large subdivision along the north side of Ridgedale Avenue - the main road running through Cedar Knolls. Small plots of land were quickly sold off and a community of summer homes and bungalows came to life with vacationers from NYC. Today, Cedar Knolls is a densely populated suburban community. Most of the small bungalow homes have been expanded, winterized, or knocked-down and replaced with new construction. Cedar Knolls (07927) has its own post office and fire department. However, some residents have a Morris Plains (07950) postal address, which can be confusing. The Trailwood section of Cedar Knolls was built beginning in the 1960s and offers larger colonial homes on more spacious property lots.
Cedar Knolls is located close to Interstate 287 which runs north-south through Morris County and provides an easy connection to the major east-west routes including Interstate 80, 280, and NJ Route 24. Newark International Airport is a mere 30 minutes away. The train station in Morristown is located close by.
There are three public elementary schools in Hanover Township teaching grades K-5: Bee Meadow, Salem Drive, and Mountview Road. Memorial Junior School teaches grades 6-8. Students in grades 9-12 attend the Whippany Park Regional High School.
Hanover Township boasts many superb public attractions including the Whippany Railway Museum, the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, and the Morris County Library. Patriot's Path, a 26-mile-long wilderness walkway and bike trail, also pass through the Township along the Whippany River. Hanover Township contains many municipal parks and recreational facilities including Bee Meadow Park and Pool, Black Brook Park, Central Park, Malapardis Park, Monroe Center and Park, and the Township Community Center.
